Why Big Z

The dumpster company Scranton calls back

Most people renting a dumpster are already having a stressful week. The kitchen is in pieces, the roof is half off, or a family member has passed and there is a house full of forty years to sort out. The last thing anyone needs is a hauler who quotes one price, invoices another, and drops a container across the mailbox.

We started Big Z Dumpster Rental in 2011 with one truck and one rule: tell people the truth about what it costs and show up when we said we would. 15 years later that has not changed. Mike Zaleski still answers the phone most mornings, and our drivers still walk the drop before they back in.

We run out of 840 Providence Rd in north Scranton, which means we are not routing a truck up from Wilkes-Barre or over the mountain when you need a container today. We know which streets in the Hill Section a loaded truck should not attempt in February, which blocks have no off-street parking so the can has to go at the kerb with a permit, and which back alleys behind the double blocks are genuinely too tight for a 30.

Local knowledge

What makes hauling in Scranton different

Plaster is not drywall

Almost every pre-war house here is plaster over wood lath with a mortar scratch coat — roughly two to three times the weight of drywall for the same volume. A 20 yard that still looks half empty can already be tons over allowance. It is the single most common way a Scranton homeowner gets a surprise on the invoice, and we will flag it before we deliver, not after.

Half the city has no driveway

Row homes and double blocks across South Side, West Side and the Flats have nowhere to put a container except the street — which means a City of Scranton street-occupancy permit, cones and reflective marking. We do this every week and will walk you through it in one phone call. See the permit guide.

Ice, wind and water

Ice storms snap hardwood limbs, summer downpours push the Lackawanna and its tributaries up fast, and flooded full basements are routine here — Lee in 2011 and Ida in 2021 are the benchmarks. When the municipal debris queue runs weeks long, a container at the kerb beats waiting. See storm debris removal.

Pennsylvania has real rules

The Covered Device Recycling Act keeps televisions, computers and monitors out of landfill and out of the trash statewide, and there are separate restrictions on tires, lead-acid batteries, used oil and yard waste. One old TV can flag an entire load. Our accepted-materials guide covers every category.

What customers say

Straight talk from Scranton and Northeastern Pennsylvania

We gutted the kitchen and a back bedroom in a 1912 double block on the North Side and I had no idea plaster weighed what it weighs. Mike told me on the phone to take the 15 instead of the 20 and swap it, and he was right. The number he quoted was the number I paid.

Dan K.Green Ridge — Gut Renovation

Row home, no driveway, one-way street. I assumed it would be a nightmare. They answered the street-permit question in one phone call, dropped it exactly where they said, coned it off, and had it gone the morning I called.

Marisa P.South Side — Whole-House Cleanout

Slate tear-off in Dunmore. Every other outfit quoted me a 30 yard. Big Z was the only one who asked how many squares and then told me a 30 would be over weight before it was half full. Two smaller hauls, no drama, no overage.

Tom R.Dunmore — Roofing Contractor

After my mother passed we had eighty years of a family to clear out of the house in Olyphant. They swapped the container twice without making us feel rushed, and the driver was decent about it every single time. That mattered more than the price did.

Dumpster Rental FAQs

How fast can you deliver a dumpster in Scranton?

Most of the time, same day if you call before about 11am, and next morning otherwise. We run our own trucks out of 840 Providence Rd in Scranton, so we are not waiting on a dispatcher two counties away. During storm cleanup and peak spring remodeling weeks it can stretch to 48 hours, and we will tell you honestly when you call.

What does a flat rate actually include?

Delivery, pickup, an agreed rental period and a set tonnage allowance with disposal included. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee, no admin fee. The only way the number changes is if you go over the weight allowance or keep the container longer than agreed, and we tell you both limits before we deliver.

Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?

No. Plenty of our customers text us a photo of where they want it and go to work. All we need is clear access, a spot free of cars and low branches, and permission to be on the property. If access is tight or gated, tell us when you book and we will schedule accordingly.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

We put protection boards under the wheels and rails on every residential delivery, which spreads the load instead of concentrating it on four small contact patches. Around here the bigger risks are aged concrete and brick sidewalks, soft ground after rain, and sheet ice in winter — and we will tell you if we would rather come back a day later than set a loaded can on ice. Our placement guide explains it fully.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Scranton?

On your own driveway or private property, generally no. In the public street or right-of-way you usually do, and that goes through the City of Scranton — or PennDOT on a state-maintained route. Every surrounding borough runs its own process too. Given how many homes here have no off-street parking, this comes up constantly; see our permit guide or just call and ask.

What can I not put in the dumpster?

Wet paint, solvents, motor oil, fuel, pesticides, asbestos, propane and other pressurised cylinders, batteries, medical waste, tires, and freon-containing appliances. Pennsylvania also bans electronics such as televisions and computers from landfill disposal. Everything else on a normal cleanout or renovation is fine — when in doubt, ask us before it goes in.

Still not sure?

Two minutes on the phone beats twenty minutes reading. Tell us the job and we will size it, price it and book it.
